Over the last decade, schools invested billions in classroom devices—laptops, tablets, and phones—believing they would modernize learning.
The results tell a different story:
A neuroscientist told the U.S. Senate that decades of putting screens in classrooms have weakened learning environments, lowering attention, memory, literacy, and numeracy.
Maine’s statewide laptop program, one of the earliest initiatives, failed to raise test scores over a 15-year period.
PISA data shows that students who spend more time on digital devices during the school day perform worse than peers with limited screen access.
Most telling of all:
The decline in U.S. reading and math scores aligns almost perfectly with the rapid rise of teenage smartphone use.
We handed students devices engineered by the world’s sharpest minds—not to educate them, but to capture their attention. Then we expected them to focus, reflect, and master complex material.
Distraction became the baseline, deep thinking took a back seat, and learning paid the price.
If we want students to read, think, and solve problems at high levels, we must design schools that protect human attention—not compete with billion-dollar algorithms.
