The C&B Three-Dimensional Instructional Framework Bringing Together Rigorous Thinking, Effective Practice, and Holistic Growth Schools must promote critical thinking, meaningful learning experiences, and community well-being, yet these priorities are often addressed separately. The C&B Three-Dimensional Instructional Framework brings them together in one coherent approach to teaching, learning, and growth. Where the Idea Began Throughout my years in K-12 education, I observed schools using a variety of tools, models, and initiatives to strengthen teaching and learning. Some focused on the depth of student thinking, while others emphasized instructional practice, school improvement, or educator development. Each offered valuable insights. Yet I continued to consider what was missing. The Question That Changed Everything How do we intentionally support the growth and well-being of both students and educators? That question became the foundation of the C&B Three-Dimensional Instructional Framework. Rather than treating rigorous thinking, effective practice, and human growth as separate priorities, the framework connects them through three interrelated dimensions that support the whole educational experience. Three Dimensions. One Purpose. Thinking Dimension: Hess Cognitive Rigor Matrix How deeply are students thinking? The Hess Cognitive Rigor Matrix helps educators design learning experiences that move beyond recall to analysis, reasoning, problem-solving, and application. Practice Dimension How does learning come to life? The Practice Dimension examines the instructional practices, learning experiences, and collaborative actions that engage learners in meaningful work, support the application of knowledge and skills, and promote continuous growth. Growth Dimension: C&B Holistic Growth Model-26 (HGM-26) How are students and educators growing and thriving? The C&B Holistic Growth Model-26 addresses the academic, social, emotional, cultural, and personal growth and well-being of students and educators. It recognizes that educators are learners, too, and that their growth matters alongside student development.
